Role Description
Operations Leader (a.k.a. Chief Internal Optimizer)
In a nutshell…
You're a systems thinker and behind-the-scenes orchestrator who finds deep satisfaction in creating order from ambiguity, and who derives satisfaction from empowering others to succeed. You're passionate about removing obstacles and creating the conditions where everyone can contribute their unique talents toward a shared mission.
Description
The Build Tank is a consultancy that helps social impact organizations renew the promise of technology platforms, notably including Salesforce, using a human-centered model of technology stewardship.
As we grow, we are looking for a skilled Operations Leader, more or less to make everything better, everywhere, always. :) This is a small team of seasoned, skilled, positive-minded, ace players. Our environment is dynamic and ambitious, while we also work to maintain a healthy and sustainable balance.
In this role, your focus will be on facilitating, implementing, and continually improving operational infrastructure, including systems for planning, communication, collaboration and project management. You’ll help transform future visions into actionable plans, and then drive those forward. You’ll execute strategic initiatives to support the agency’s short and long term goals. You’ll help us ensure that clients are thrilled with the value they get from working with us, and that employees and contractors are thrilled with the experience of being part of our team.
To succeed in this role, you must thrive working with complex challenges and get lit up thinking through how to operationalize visions and ideas into efficient and realistic execution. An understanding of nonprofit technology might be an advantage in this role, but may not be required for the right person.
What You'll Do:
Be responsible for the trains running smoothly and on time.
Work with the CEO and other staff as a key thought partner on how to build towards the future vision of the agency, and help translate that vision into reality.
Help with planning and structuring engagements and related capacity needs.
Oversee the creation, maintenance, and continuous iteration of internal processes that facilitate the right amount of coordination and communication among the team.
Learn and maintain effective project management systems (we use Asana) and maintain oversight of effective project management throughout the agency.
Own oversight of the agency's tools, and methods of collaboration, ensuring they support our goals and objectives.
Take leadership in HR/people, recruiting, administration, IT security, and elements of finance.
Propose, implement, and oversee key operational norms for important rhythms like planning, goal setting, meetings, and retrospectives.
Manage key internal projects from inception to completion.
Help foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
Who You Are:
You're excited about our model and mission.
You strive for excellence in your work and bring a level of tenacious ownership to it.
You're a go-getter – proactive, persistent, and accountable.
You’re self-motivated and can drive progress forward independently.
You're passionate about creating structures, systems, and processes that facilitate high quality work in a sustainable environment.
You thrive in an entrepreneurial environment.
You thrive on turning ideas into reality, and are comfortable in ‘generative’ settings with some ambiguity, pulling together clear next steps and possible paths forward based on overarching goals and purpose.
You're comfortable with a highly “agile” way of working, starting with small steps and making changes along the way as new information is learned.
A pivot from existing plans that is based on new information or insights doesn’t feel destabilizing, rather it makes perfect sense to you when new understanding has been gained.
You thrive in a collaborative environment, are inclined towards seeing the best in your colleagues and building on each other’s strengths.
You’re naturally oriented towards looking for “everybody wins” solutions.
You bring energy, creativity, and optimism to everything you do.
You bring empathy, warmth and humility to your work and relationships.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
Strong strategic thinking and communication skills.
5+ years of experience in operations and/or advanced project management.
Strong project management skills and prior experience with project management tools (e.g., Asana) and remote work collaboration tools.
Experience with change management and problem-solving across an organization.
Experience with nonprofit technology is a plus.
Experience in a consulting environment is a plus.
